Jordan broke the bone three games into the season, on Oct. 29, and told Pedroia that he practiced on it in pain for more than a week before the extent of the injury was determined.
He was then given a three-day window to decide whether he’d have what could have been season-ending surgery. Surgery back then was no slam dunk; the injury was relatively rare, particularly among basketball players. It typically hits hockey players, who can at least skate with it rather than pound it like a baseball or basketball player.
Jordan opted for the surgery, returned to action late in the season, and then took the NBA by storm in the playoffs with his mythic 63-point effort in a losing cause to the eventual champion Celtics.
Jordan had no issues with his foot for the rest of his career and went on to win five MVP awards and six championships. Pedroia’s break was slightly more serious than Jordan’s, but the one-time MVP and champion is hoping to avoid surgery.
