‘American Idol’: Crystal Bowersox opens in top form; Siobhan Magnus soars on ‘Think’
Would Crystal Bowersox, who had been ill the day before, be able to perform?
Yes, she would, and beautifully.
She brought religious fervor to Creedence Clearwater’s As Long As I Can See the Light.” Her continued participation is crucial to Idol” because she is one of the best singers.
The judges loved her. Ellen DeGeneres raved over her natural talent. Simon Cowell said he had underestimated Crystal last week, praised her for not playing the sympathy card and described her as a really serious artist.” (Crystal is pictured in this Fox photo by Michael Becker.)
And then the show took a big slide.
Haeley Vaughn, who can’t help smiling, tackled Miley Cyrus’ The Climb.” It was a very wobbly climb. Excruciating,” Randy Jackson said, adding his familiar pitchy” complaint. It was a complete and utter mess,” Cowell said, which is a familiar complaint from him.
Lacey Brown sang Kiss Me” and was much improved from last week — but you have to remember how bad she was last week. Adorable,” DeGeneres ruled. The other judges were far more critical. My take: She’s a goner.
Katie Stevens had some nice moments on an erratic version of Girl, Put Your Records On.” She is one of the best singers, but why isn’t she breaking through? Ah, song choice, and consequently, the judges were disappointed in her. It wasn’t a winning performance,” Cowell decreed.
Didi Benami put her own spin on Lean on Me” and ran aground. It wasn’t good,” Kara DioGuardi said. All over the place,” Cowell said, complaining it was a generic performance. Ryan Seacrest, taking the song’s message to heart, embraced Didi to comfort her after the drubbing.
Michelle Delamor, who was beautiful, tried very hard on With Arms Wide Open.” Yet the results, to these ears, were tepid. DioGuardi, however, bought the performance, and Cowell gave lukewarm praise.
Then things, finally, were looking up.
Lilly Scott took A Change Is Gonna Come” in jazzy, offbeat directions and wowed the judges. Jackson proclaimed it his favorite performance of the night. DeGeneres called it the best of the night. I wasn’t crazy about it,” Cowell said, yet added that it was great. Huh? Crystal still seemed to have the edge at that point.
The night’s revelation was Katelyn Epperly, who performed Coldplay’s The Scientist” at the piano. She and the rendition were beautiful. Way too slow,” DeGeneres said. A million times better than last week, Cowell ruled.
Paige Miles gave an energetic, soulful reading of Walk Away,” which original Idol” Kelly Clarkson performed. DeGeneres praised her for having fun. Not angry enough, ruled DioGuardi, who wrote the song. Forgettable, Cowell said.
And yet, she was better than many others.
The delightfully quirky Siobhan Magnus closed the show. That gal unleashed her big voice on Think.” She moved around the stage like a seasoned pro. (She’s 19.) The judges’ comments: Jackson (”bold”), DeGeneres (”man, that was good”), Cowell (”you’re such a strange person”). Siobhan’s big note on Think” was the night’s high point.
