Oil Spill Gulf of Mexico 2010 – BP Oil Spill 2010. The BP oil spill is causing a lot of economic and environmental problems for the Gulf Coast region. Not only is there a 10 day ban on fishing, but also dead turtles are washing up on shore. In addition, in areas of New Orleans people complain about the stench of oil.
Summer rentals have been canceled and the entire fishing and shrimping industries could be facing an unprecedented loss. Already states are pushing to declare fishing disasters so that those affected by the oil spill can receive federal aid that is set aside for them.
Although BP said that they did not cause the accident which led up to the oil spill, they are responsible for it, and the US government will make sure that they pay for all the damage done.
Currently there are a few theories on how to stop the flow of oil into the water. One way would be to drill relief wells to re-direct the flow of oil.
Another theory is to make domes that cap the oil spill and then direct oil up to ships and haul the oil off that way. Still yet, there’s a long way to go before this spill is over.
And then we have to wonder how the oil that has already poured in to the ocean will be cleaned up. The oil can- and will – kill fragile ecosystems of marine life as food sources become coated with oil and act as poison to the larger animals that consume them.
