City offers tips as census takers go door to doo.tax extension form 2010
The city of Evanston thanks all residents who took 10 minutes this year to fill out their 2010 Census questionnaires.
The process is not complete however, as 24 percent of the Evanston community still needs to be counted.
Now to the end of July, census enumerators will be going door to door in Evanston neighborhoods in an effort to count those who did not return a form. A census enumerator must follow-up in person with every address that doesn't mail back the form in order to obtain the responses. Typically, residents might know or recognize a census enumerator, as the U.S. Census Bureau has hired door-to-door enumerators within local neighborhoods and communities.
If a U.S. Census Bureau employee knocks on a resident's door, here are some recognition tips to assure the validity of the employee:
• The census enumerator must present an identification badge that contains a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark and expiration date. The census enumerator also will be carrying a bag with a Census Bureau logo.
• The census enumerator will provide supervisor contact information and/or the local census office telephone number for verification, if asked.
• The census taker will only ask questions that appear on the federal census form.
Census enumerators will not ask for a resident's Social Security number, bank account number or credit card numbers; will never solicit for donations; never contact a resident by e-mail; will not ask about citizenship status; and will not ask to enter a resident's home.
If anyone claiming to represent the U.S. Census Bureau attempts to ask these questions, do not answer, and call the Evanston Police Department at to report the individual.
Answering the questions from the census enumerator takes less than 10 minutes. Residents doing their part ensures that the city of Evanston has a complete count of all residents, and ensures that the city will have access to Evanston's fair share of more than $400 billion in annual tax dollars that is based on census data.
