The old adage that children reflect what they see sure is true in the case of Kary Osmond. The star of CBC's Best Recipes Ever was raised in a home with not one but two kitchens that were always in use. Her parents ran a Ukrainian deli in Mississauga, Ontario and her mom operated a catering business from a prep kitchen in the basement of the family home.
"I was always in the kitchen with mom and she gave me little jobs all the time or I would just sit and watch her," says Osmond. "We were a big cooking family. We would always be cooking together."
Pasta Carbonara was one of her first dishes to master. "Mom taught me the cheaters' version with scrambled eggs on egg noodles with bacon and I would always make that for dinner at night," she adds.
Osmond also credits her mother, Diana Brailsford, with her love of cookbooks. "She sends me cookbooks for all the holidays and my birthday, always with an amazing message in it. At my cookbook (Best Recipes Ever) launch this year, I was able to give her my book with a message that said that I couldn't have done it without her support and everything she taught me in the kitchen."
Growing up with an Italian mama, David Rocco thinks his affair with food was inevitable. "I love the Sunday morning rituals. Waking up smelling espresso being made and simmering (tomato) sauce. My mom getting ready for the big Sunday lunch with all the immediate and extended family," reflects the star of David Rocco's Dolce Vita.
That famous Italian tomato sauce was one of the first things he learned to make. "I remember coming home at lunchtime and eating eggs poached in tomato sauce. It's the best," he says. That's why he had to include the recipe in his first book, David Rocco's Dolce Vita. Look for a second - David Rocco: Made in Italy - coming this fall.
Rocco still enjoys working in the kitchen with his mother Josie, as they verbally spar over technique. "We have a wonderful back and forth in the kitchen," explains Rocco.
Laura Calder's mom, Doris, gave her creative license in the kitchen when she was very young. "She gave me a long leash to do whatever I wanted," says the star of French Food at Home. "I had an obsession with making cakes all the time."
