Casting is a delicate science in the world of filmmaking, especially when it comes to films based on a property made famous in another medium. When it comes to movies based on comic books, Hollywood tries to cast actors that appeal to the general moviegoing public while at the same time pleasing the fans of the original comic. Today’s Six-Pack lists the six most spot-on casting choices of the current comic book movie era, and I defy any self-respecting comic fan to dispute any of these choices.
This choice was a no-brainer to anyone who grew up reading X-Men comics and/or watching the cartoon series, but at the time, this must have seemed like a risky casting choice. The classically-trained thespian Patrick Stewart was, of course, already well-known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on the long-running TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation and its many spinoff films, so it may have seemed iffy to the executives at 20th Century Fox as to whether fans of Marvel’s premier mutant team would truly embrace him as the team’s co-founder and leader Charles Xavier. As luck would have it, Stewart owned the role just as much as he did with Captain Picard. He played Xavier with the perfect amount of warmth and gravitas that the character exhibited in both the comic and the show, and his performance is one of the many factors that led to the enormous success of the X-Men film franchise, which of course led to the current Comic Book Movie Renaissance.
